Red currants are hardy shrubs that produce tender, tart red berries in late June to mid-July. Red Lake produces clusters of large red berries that are delicious straight off the bush or they can be used in classic cullinary desserts, jams, jellies and drinks. Its semi-erect habit does not require any supports. A vigorous grower that has been on the market since it was introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1933. Currants prefer slightly acidic soils. Keep well watered to establish vigorous roots. These are self-pollinating and do not require other currants to produce berries.
